Treat every change in load state as a new setup. A roof box, platform, kayak, or tent contributes its own mass, and a stationary occupant load is not a travel rating. Compare vehicle, rack, accessory, and cargo limits using the most restrictive applicable condition.

Before making a change, focus on recording the vehicle rating, rack rating, accessory weight, cargo weight, and support spacing. Record the vehicle, rack or carrier, load dimensions, weight, and rating source. Recheck after loading because center of mass, strap angle, and clearance can change. A tight strap or product photo does not establish an approved limit. Check doors, hatch, sunroof, exhaust, lamps, plate, and ground clearance before travel.
