The short answer

A swing-away rack adds a pivot and latch to the rear load path. Check the receiver, pivot, latch, safety pin, tailgate, exhaust, lights, wiring, and bike clearance in both closed and open positions. Never swing a loaded rack without following the maker’s procedure.

Before making a change, focus on checking latch engagement, swing arc, tailgate position, wiring slack, and unloaded clearance. Record the vehicle, rack or carrier, load dimensions, weight, and rating source. Recheck after loading because center of mass, strap angle, and clearance can change.
