Why check the carrier tilted?

Some carriers tilt for access, which changes the platform and load path into the tailgate or hatch swing.

Does an empty clearance test prove a loaded one?

No. Cargo can change sag, visibility, platform height, and the door path.

What else can be blocked?

A hitch carrier can clear a closed tailgate and still block the opening when tilted, loaded, or swung. Check shank rise, platform depth, hinge path, load, and exhaust.

Test four positions

Check the carrier empty with the tailgate closed, opening, tilted, and fully open. Repeat with the intended load secured. Record shank rise, platform depth, hinge or latch path, exhaust outlet, lights, plate, camera, and ground clearance.

Do not stand in the door path or force the hatch against the carrier. A carrier that clears the bumper can still damage a door or create an exhaust and visibility problem.
