The short answer

The rack must engage the approved truck structure through the actual liner and rail arrangement. A pad can protect a finish, but it cannot correct insufficient jaw contact, a shifted drop-in liner, a rounded cap, or a fastener that bottoms out. Test fit before loading.

Mark the rack position, inspect after the first drive, and remove the load if the marks move or the liner shows crushing. Do not use extra rubber, longer bolts, or a higher torque to compensate for a poor interface.

Practical decision notes

The key question for this topic is whether clamps sit on a soft or textured bedliner. Before making a change, focus on checking contact pads, clamp travel, torque instructions, paint or liner damage, and recheck timing. Record the vehicle, rack or carrier, load dimensions, weight, and rating source. Recheck after loading because center of mass, strap angle, and clearance can change. A tight strap or product photo does not establish an approved limit. Check doors, hatch, sunroof, exhaust, lamps, plate, and ground clearance before travel. Stop when hardware, seals, or the load path fall outside the manual.
