The short answer

Drilling is irreversible, so the template must be treated as a layout document, not a suggestion. Verify the exact truck, bed length, liner, rail cap, rack revision, hole spacing, underside access, and sealant method before touching the bed. A rack that is one inch off can create a crooked load path and a leaking installation.

Pre-drill checklist

Check What to confirm Stop if
Template Correct model, bed length, and rack version The paper or drawing is generic.
Symmetry Equal offsets from fixed bed features Measurements conflict.
Underside Wires, hoses, reinforcements, and tool access A hidden component is in the path.
Fastener Washer, thread, and torque sequence The nut cannot seat fully.
Sealing Approved sealant and corrosion treatment Method is unspecified.

Use a non-destructive mock-up, mark from fixed reference points, and have a second person verify the dimensions. Do not drill through a liner or cap unless the instructions specify how the interface is treated. After installation, inspect for leaks and recheck the rack before loading.

Limits

This guide does not provide a drilling pattern. Use the exact rack manual or a qualified installer.
