The short answer
Foam blocks and crossbars solve different transport problems. Blocks can be simple for occasional use when the vehicle roof and product instructions allow them. Crossbars provide a defined support system but require correct installation, bar spread, and load limits. Neither makes an unsecured kayak safe.
